ENT Surgeon specialising in Cancer
While training in otolaryngology (ENT), head and neck surgery, Prof Dixon recognised that patients desired to be treated by true sub-specialists, up to date and highly trained in their field. This was particularly true of those suffering from cancer. Great comfort is provided to patients and their families when they know their doctor is dedicated to treating their condition.
After completing training in ENT surgery, Prof Dixon committed to providing world-class care in head and neck tumours. In addition to two years of post-fellowship training in North America, he has conducted PhD research into image-guided surgery and integrates the most modern technology into his practice where appropriate. This includes endoscopic surgery in the nose, skull base and throat as well as robotic surgery and reconstruction. Prof Dixon established the Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) program for throat cancer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and is Melbourne's most experienced TORS surgeon. He also has an interest in endoscopic surgery for sinus disease.
Although Prof Dixon performs many general ENT operations, his main areas of expertise are:
- Head and neck tumour surgery
- Parotid gland and Parapharyngeal tumour surgery
- Throat cancer and transoral robotic surgery
- Thyroid surgery
- Sinus and nasal surgery
- Head and neck reconstructive surgery
Prof Dixon is Director of the Head and Neck Cancer team at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne. He Chairs Multi-disciplinary head and neck cancer meetings at Epworth and St. Vincent's. All Dr Dixon’s tumour cases are presented at these meetings, to gain a consensus opinion prior to treatment.
